Gun is in very good overall condition showing only light use. Wood is solid with original finish left and just a few light use and handling marks on buttstock. Barrel is excellent with no marks. On my 552, it has the letters "P Z" for Jun 1975. The lower leg on the P is somewhat short, but there's enough there that I can tell it IS a "P". (It also has the plain wood and 23 1/2" barrel) I would disregard the numbers ("78"). They are essentially assembly and/or inspectors' marks. Mine has "55" stamped in it.

552 feed problems. Recently purchased a Remington 552 speedmaster. First trip to the range was a disaster, bad jams every shot. Purchased action spring and carrier spring. Installed action spring before heading to the range yesterday and noticed someone had cut down the one in the gun. Now when firing it doesnt jam but doesnt load the next round.
