Actually the L31 Vortec heads will fit on a 305 as far as valve clearance is concerned. But they do lower compression and the larger valves and ports will cost about 15-20 pound feet of torque and thus some horsepower under about 3500 RPM. That being on top of the bottom end power lost to lower compression of the 64cc chamber.

To begin with, L31 Vortec heads have 7/16" ROUND holes already in the heads- not slots - that the pushrods pass through. The earlier non self aligning rocker arm equipped heads have a 7/16" x 11/32" ovoid hole in them.
